Why two quotes can be so far apart

  • Where you sleep

A tent on a public campsite and a suite in a luxury lodge can sit in the same park. This is usually the biggest difference between two quotes for the same route.

  • Which parks, and how you reach them

Serengeti and Ngorongoro cost more to enter than Tarangire or Lake Manyara, and the crater adds a charge per vehicle. Flying between parks saves hours on the road and costs more than driving.

  • How many days

Every extra day adds park fees, a night's stay and your crew or guide. On Kilimanjaro an extra day costs more and gives you longer to adjust to the altitude.

  • How many of you there are

A private trip is priced for the whole group, so the price per person often falls as your group grows.

  • When you travel

Fees at several national parks are a little lower from 15 March to 15 May. Popular dates such as the migration calving and river crossing seasons need booking early.

Park fees

The government sets these, and they are the same whoever you book with. Check the Included list on your tour: our safari and climb prices include the fees it names.

What you pay on top

  • Flights

International flights, and any domestic flights your tour does not list.

  • Visa

A single-entry tourist visa is US$50 for most visitors. Citizens of the United States take the multiple-entry visa at US$100. Apply on the official e-visa portal, allowing up to 10 days.

  • Inbound insurance

A government policy every visitor must now hold: about US$44 per adult for 92 days, on the mainland since 1 October 2026 and on Zanzibar since 2024. Keep your own travel insurance as well.

  • Travel insurance

Your own policy, which should cover evacuation and, if you are climbing, trekking to 5,895 m.

  • Tips

An expected part of what guides, cooks and porters earn. Our article on tipping sets out what to budget.

  • Personal spending

Drinks, laundry, souvenirs, and on a climb your own clothes and boots, plus hotels before and after.
