Nyerere National Park

Nyerere National Park, previously known globally as the Selous Game Reserve, is a massive UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest protected wilderness areas in the world. Located in southern Tanzania, its vast eco-landscape is carved by the mighty Rufiji River, creating a complex network of channels, lakes, swamps, and riverine forests. The terrain is exceptionally undisturbed, wild, and sprawling, offering a stark contrast to the structured driving loops of the northern safari parks.

The park's aquatic networks support massive resident populations of hippos and giant Nile crocodiles basking along the riverbanks. On land, the miombo woodlands and riverine thickets are home to Africa's largest population of the endangered African wild dog, alongside significant numbers of elephants, lions, buffalo, and leopards. Birdlife is spectacularly rich, with over 400 species including the rare Pel's fishing owl and colorful bee-eaters nesting in the sandy river cliffs.

Nyerere stands out for its diverse safari activities, being one of the few places where travelers can participate in boat safaris, walking safaris, and traditional game drives all in one stay. Logistics are managed primarily via short bush flights from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar directly to various internal camp airstrips. Accommodations are heavily luxury-focused, offering stunning, open-air tented camps and wooden river lodges built directly along the water's edge.
