Kikelewa Caves Camp

Kikelewa Caves Camp lies at about 3,600 metres on a quieter diversion of the Rongai Route. It takes its name from a group of shallow volcanic caves nearby that once sheltered early expeditions and porters. Ringed by giant groundsels and lobelias, the camp is an important stepping stone that helps climbers acclimatise before the trail climbs toward the jagged Mawenzi peak.

Kikelewa is a basic public campsite, not a hut or lodge. Sleeping is in expedition tents pitched by the crew on marked pitches, with shared pit latrines the only facility; there is no restaurant, tap water, electricity, Wi-Fi or private bathroom. The surrounding vegetation and terrain give some natural shelter from the wind, but warmth comes from your own gear.

Meals, tents, water and the whole camp are set up and carried by your mountain crew rather than provided on site, with water drawn from a nearby source and treated by the team. Mobile signal is unreliable here. The camp’s height makes it a genuine acclimatisation stop, so a steady pace and good hydration matter before the push toward Mawenzi Tarn.
