Empakai Crater Camp

Empakai Crater Camp sits on the forested rim of the remote Empakaai Crater in the Ngorongoro highlands, overlooking a soda lake known for its flamingos. It is a striking stop on Crater Highlands walking treks.

The site is a basic wilderness camp with grass pitches and simple park outhouses, and no facilities beyond these. The setting is remote and primitive, with comfort provided entirely by the trekking crew’s equipment.

A private crew sets up and runs a mobile camp kitchen. Because the rim forest has leopard and buffalo activity, an armed ranger escort is required after dark – an honest safety point to note.
