Crater Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro

Overview

Crater Camp is the highest and most extreme overnight camp on Kilimanjaro, at about 5,750 metres on the floor of the Kibo summit crater. It is reserved for highly acclimatised climbers seeking a rare mountaineering experience, and lets guests spend a night beside the towering walls of ancient blue glacial ice. Reaching and sleeping here is only possible with a specialised, experienced support crew.

This is a basic public campsite in an arctic, extreme-altitude setting, with no rooms, restaurant, tap water, electricity, Wi-Fi or private bathroom. Climbers sleep in expedition tents pitched by the crew on the crater floor, with only the most minimal facilities. At this height the cold is severe and the air is very thin, so comfort and safety depend entirely on high-grade gear and the mountain team.

All meals, tents and water are prepared and carried by your trekking crew, with water melted from the surrounding glacial ice. Because of the extreme altitude, sub-zero conditions and the real risk of Acute Mountain Sickness, an overnight here requires excellent acclimatisation, careful monitoring by your guides and a well-equipped support crew. It offers an otherworldly, arctic experience found nowhere else in East Africa.
