Lava Tower Camp

Lava Tower Camp is a well-known high-altitude landmark at about 4,630 metres, at the foot of a 90-metre volcanic plug known as the Lava Tower. For Machame and Lemosho climbers it is usually a lunch and acclimatisation stop on the “climb high, sleep low” day, but it also serves as an overnight high camp for those taking the Western Breach route. The setting is intensely alpine, with barren volcanic scree and dramatic views of Kibo’s western glaciers.

The camp is a basic public campsite with no rooms or permanent buildings. Climbers who overnight here sleep in tents pitched by the crew, and facilities are limited to shared pit latrines; there is no restaurant, tap water, electricity, Wi-Fi or private bathroom. Volcanic rock offers some wind shelter, but the cold at this height is constant and warmth comes from your gear.

Meals, tents, water and camp setup are provided and carried by your trekking crew rather than by the site. Because Lava Tower sits well above 4,500 metres, it is a demanding acclimatisation point where some climbers feel the altitude, so guides watch closely for symptoms and the area serves as an evacuation reference on the mountain. Steady pacing and hydration are important whether you stop for lunch or camp overnight.
