Which Kilimanjaro Route Is Right for You? Lemosho, Machame, Marangu and More

May 31, 2026 · AfricanX

Choosing your route is the single biggest decision of a Kilimanjaro climb. It shapes your scenery, your crowds, your comfort and, most importantly, your chance of reaching the summit. Here is how the main routes compare, without the sales spin.

Hiking kilimanjaro from horombo huts

Lemosho: our top recommendation

Lemosho starts on the quiet western side and is widely regarded as the most beautiful route. Over seven or eight days it offers an excellent acclimatisation profile that follows the climb-high, sleep-low principle. Longer means higher success rates, and Lemosho consistently delivers.

Machame: the popular classic

Machame, the Whiskey Route, is scenic and challenging, usually done in six or seven days. It is busier than Lemosho but has a strong success rate on the seven-day version. A great choice for fit, adventurous trekkers.

Marangu: the only hut route

Marangu, the Coca-Cola Route, is the only route with dormitory huts rather than tents. It is often sold as the easiest, but its shorter profile and less effective acclimatisation actually lower success rates. Choose the six-day version, never five.

Rongai and the Northern Circuit

  • Rongai approaches from the drier north, a good choice in the wetter months and quieter than the southern routes.
  • Northern Circuit is the longest route at eight or nine days, with the best acclimatisation and the highest summit success of all.

The bottom line

More days on the mountain means better acclimatisation and a higher chance of standing on Uhuru Peak. If you can spare the time, choose seven days or more. Tell us your fitness, budget and dates and we will match you to the route that gives you the best shot at the summit.
