Kilimanjaro Packing List: Gear That Gets You to Uhuru Peak
June 24, 2026 · AfricanX
The right gear on Kilimanjaro keeps you warm, dry and comfortable across four climate zones in one climb. You do not need to buy everything, since many items can be hired in Moshi, but you do need the right system of layers. Here is what works.

The layering system
- Base layers: moisture-wicking tops and bottoms, never cotton.
- Mid layers: a fleece and an insulated down or synthetic jacket for the summit.
- Outer layers: a waterproof, breathable jacket and trousers.
- Summit night: everything at once, plus a warm hat, a buff and insulated gloves with liners.
Footwear
Well-broken-in waterproof hiking boots are essential. Never climb in brand-new boots. Bring several pairs of wool or synthetic socks and a pair of gaiters for dust and scree.
Sleep and pack
- A four-season sleeping bag rated to at least minus ten Celsius. These are easy to hire locally.
- An inflatable sleeping mat for warmth and comfort.
- A thirty to forty litre daypack with a rain cover.
- A soft duffel for the porters to carry, kept under the weight limit.
The small things that matter
- A headtorch with spare batteries, vital for summit night.
- Two water bottles or a hydration bladder, plus a thermos for the summit push.
- High-factor sun cream, lip balm and quality sunglasses for the glare of the glaciers.
- Trekking poles, which save your knees on the long descent.
We send every climber a full, personalised kit list and can arrange quality rental gear in Moshi, so you can travel light and still be ready for the summit. Get the layers right and the mountain feels a great deal friendlier.
