Mahale Mountains National Park

Wild chimpanzee trekking on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Mahale Mountains National Park is a breathtaking wilderness area situated in western Tanzania, where the steep, mist-shrouded peaks of the Mahale range meet the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. The eco-landscape is a unique fusion of primary lowland rainforest, alpine bamboo groves, and pristine white-sand lakeside beaches. This isolated paradise is completely devoid of roads or infrastructure, protecting an ecosystem that feels entirely cut off from the modern world.

The park is globally celebrated for sheltering the world's largest protected population of wild chimpanzees, with habituated groups allowing for intimate, on-foot primate trekking. The jungle canopy also hosts multiple other primate species, including red colobus and yellow baboons, alongside a diverse array of endemic butterflies and forest birds. Down on the lake, the underwater world is equally rich, containing hundreds of species of colorful cichlid fish found nowhere else on earth.

Activities are split between morning guided chimpanzee treks into the steep forest and afternoon lakeside relaxation, kayaking, or dhow boat safaris. Logistics require a light aircraft flight to a remote dirt airstrip, followed by a multi-hour dhow boat transfer along the lakeshore to reach the camps. Accommodations are ultra-exclusive luxury eco-lodges built from sustainable timber, sitting directly on the beach to offer an incredible blend of jungle trekking and tropical relaxation.
