The Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro: Seasons, Weather and Crowds
June 12, 2026 · AfricanX
Kilimanjaro can be climbed all year, but weather and crowds vary a great deal by season. Pick the right window and you give yourself clear skies, safer trails and a better chance at the summit.

The two best seasons
The prime climbing windows follow the dry seasons.
- January to mid-March: generally clear and a little quieter, with the chance of fresh snow near the summit for postcard views. Slightly colder at altitude.
- June to October: the long dry season and the most popular time, with stable weather and busy trails, especially in August and September.
The seasons to avoid
The long rains from late March to May and the short rains in November bring wet, slippery trails and cloud that hides the views. Some climbers still go in these months for solitude and lower prices, but it takes a flexible attitude and good gear.
Full moon and quiet dates
Timing your summit night for a full moon means natural light on the final ascent and, if the sky is clear, an unforgettable scene. If you prefer quiet trails, avoid the August peak and consider a start early in the week.
Whatever the season, expect every climate
Kilimanjaro takes you through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and an arctic summit in a matter of days. You will meet warm afternoons and freezing nights on the same climb, so layered clothing matters more than the calendar.
We watch conditions closely and help you choose both the month and the exact departure that suit your goals, whether that is clear views, thin crowds or a full-moon summit.
