Rongai Simba Camp

Rongai Simba Camp is the first overnight stop on the Rongai Route, the quieter trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border. It sits at roughly 2,600 metres on the edge of the montane forest, where the cultivated lower slopes give way to open heather and moorland. The camp has a wild, uncrowded feel with clear views out over the Kenyan plains far below, and it opens the gradual, well-paced ascent used on longer Rongai itineraries.

This is a basic public campsite rather than a lodge or hut, so there are no rooms or buildings to stay in. Climbers sleep in expedition tents that the mountain crew pitches on designated tent pitches, and facilities are limited to shared pit latrines. There is no restaurant, running water, electricity, Wi-Fi, heating or private bathroom; comfort depends entirely on the tents, sleeping mats and gear your operator provides.

All meals, tents, drinking water and camp setup are prepared and carried by your trekking crew, not by the campsite itself, and the team registers arrivals at the ranger check-in point. Nights are cold and the mobile signal is patchy at best, so warm clothing and a good sleeping bag matter. As the first night on the mountain, this camp sets the pace for the acclimatisation days that follow.
