Which Kilimanjaro Route Should You Choose? Machame, Lemosho, Marangu and Rongai Compared

July 16, 2026

Reaching Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895m, is one of the great adventures on earth. But before you set foot on the mountain, one decision shapes your whole climb: which route to take. As an Arusha-based team who guide every route, here is our honest comparison to help you choose.

Machame Route (6 to 7 days)

Nicknamed the “Whiskey Route”, Machame is the most popular way up Kilimanjaro, and for good reason. It is scenically stunning, passing through rainforest, moorland and the dramatic Barranco Wall. Its natural “climb high, sleep low” profile gives good acclimatisation, and adding a seventh day at Karanga improves your summit chances significantly. It is more demanding than Marangu, with camping throughout.

Best for: fit first-timers who want the classic experience and beautiful scenery.

Lemosho Route (7 to 8 days)

Lemosho is our top recommendation for most climbers. It approaches from the quieter western side, joining the Machame trail later, so the first days feel wild and uncrowded. The longer 8-day version has one of the best acclimatisation profiles on the mountain, which means the highest summit success rates. It is a camping route.

Best for: travellers who want the best chance of the summit and the most scenery, with time to spare.

Marangu Route (5 to 6 days)

The “Coca-Cola Route” is the only one with sleeping huts rather than tents, which some climbers prefer. It is the shortest and often the cheapest option. However, the quick ascent and descent along the same path give a lower success rate, especially on the 5-day version. We strongly recommend the 6-day option with an acclimatisation day at Horombo.

Best for: climbers who prefer huts to camping, or are travelling in the wet season.

Rongai Route (6 to 7 days)

Rongai is the only route to approach from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is drier, quieter and gentler underfoot, making it a good choice during the rainy months and for those wanting solitude. The scenery is more remote and wilderness-like than the busy southern routes.

Best for: quieter climbs, rainy-season departures, and a wilder feel.

So, how do you choose?

  • For the best summit chances: the 8-day Lemosho.
  • For classic scenery on a budget of time: the 7-day Machame.
  • If you prefer huts to tents: the 6-day Marangu.
  • For peace and quiet, or the wet season: Rongai.

Whatever route you choose, the single biggest factor in reaching the summit is time on the mountain to acclimatise. That is why we always recommend the longer version of any route, and why our guides monitor your health twice a day and carry emergency oxygen.
